About
Pilates is a unique and all encompassing form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. The exercise develops centre strength, mobility, flexibility and enhances body awareness. It offers something for everybody regardless of age or ability, you are always encouraged to work at a level that feels good for you.
Somatics is like nothing you’ve done before! It’s a safe and easy way to reverse chronic tightness and pain. Muscles cannot move on their own! They need the help of the brain and central nervous system to send signals to allow movement. The brain is responsible for muscles contracting, relaxing and learning movement patterns.
If you are in pain and discomfort, it’s because communication between the brain and muscles has been forgotten. If your work demands too much sitting, if you sit too little or you are always repeating a movement pattern your brain teaches your muscles to adapt to the stress being put on your body.
Because of this repetition your brain starts to keep these muscles in tension and forgets to switch them off. This held tension in the muscles is called Sensory Motor Amnesia.
This happens unconsciously, your body has adapted to your movement patterns. To let go of chronic tightness and pain from habits, accidents or injuries, changes have to be made consciously, by the brain.
Somatic Movement
Somatic Movement uses pandiculation, a way of releasing the muscles from tension and is very effective when practiced regularly. It can help anyone who is interested in improving the way they move, feel and look. Students range in age and included people with injuries and chronic pain, From those who have never exercised before, to those who are very fit and want to improve their movement.
